Definition
The International Securities Identification Number or ISIN is used worldwide to identify specific securities such as bonds, stocks (common and preferred), futures, warrants, rights, trusts, commercial paper and options. ISINs are assigned to securities to facilitate unambiguous clearing and settlement procedures. They are composed of a 12-digit alphanumeric code and act to unify different ticker symbols – which can vary by exchange and currency -- for the same security.

Additional Information
The ISIN is based on the National Securities Identifying Number, or NSIN, assigned by governing bodies in each country, known as the National Numbering Agency (NNA). The NNA's are coordinated through the Association of National Numbering Agencies (ANNA).Information can be accessed through the ANNA Service Bureau, run by Standard and Poor's and SIX Financial Information. In those countries where no NNA is in operation, four NNAs have agreed, on a regional basis, to act as a substitute agency.
